Abstract

Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of a 4-week Yoga program on mentally ill inpatients¡¯ anxiety and depression.
Methods: A non-equivalent and non-synchronized control group design was used. For this research, a total of 30 subjects was selected at a psychiatric hospital in Busan from May 21st, 2007 to July 22nd, 2007(experimental group=15, control group=15).
Results: After the treatment, between the experimental and control groups, there was a significant difference in the level of anxiety(t=-4.585, p=.000) and depression(t=-6.098, p=.000).
Conclusion: The result of this study shows that the 4-week Yoga program works well for reducing mentally ill patients¡¯ anxiety and depression. Therefore, it is recommended that this program should be used in clinical practice as an effective nursing intervention for mentally ill patients.
